Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship programmes are a nationally-recognised, work-based route into teaching, which offers a professional qualification with no tuition fees, suited to those who have a good understanding of what it means to work in a school and have built up some experience as a teaching assistant or similar role and are looking to gain QTS.

Potential apprentices will need to be employed in a school which is able to offer and support an apprenticeship programme.

SCITT Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship

Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship programmes are a nationally-recognised, work-based route into teaching. It is an alternative to a traditional full-time university course, offering the option of a postgraduate-level qualification, no tuition fees, and the opportunity to earn while you learn.

You will undertake the Autumn and Summer term placement your employed school. You will spend 6 weeks in the Spring Term in an ‘Alternative Placement’, in a different school and different key stage. The remainder of the Spring Term will be in your employed school. The course runs in line with the school terms in Somerset. You will attend a minimum of 30 training days during the programme.

Duration: 9 months (September 2027 – July 2028)
You will have a combination of classroom teaching and off the job training. Minimum 6 hours/week off-the-job training
You will have the opportunity to undertake a specialisms in Early Years, SEND or Maths this will be an additional 6 training days
Somerset SCITT Teaching Apprentices will also the option of completing a fully funded PGCE (60 masters credits) awarded by the University of Worcester alongside their training (this is not funded through the apprenticeship levy)
You must meet the Teaching Standards (as are the requirements for PGCE ). You will be awarded QTS
To successfully complete your apprenticeship you must pass an End Point Assessment (EPA) which takes place during the final term.

Teaching and learning strategies

In relation to teaching and learning strategies each module will enable trainees to aspire to be autonomous learners; provide a programme which embraces key/transferrable skills; disseminate good practice in learning and teaching; support trainees of varying experiences, needs and backgrounds and monitor the quality of their experience.

Trainees will be expected to develop critical and evaluative understanding of the processes and practice of effective learning through demonstration of knowledge, skills and understanding related to high quality and effective practice. Trainees will develop a clear framework for their own professional values and demonstrate a critical and reflective attitude towards their practice, showing an articulation of the interdependent relationship of practice and theory.

Learning and assessment

There will be a range of teaching, learning and assessment methods including lectures, workshops, peer group activities, directed reading, independent research, directed study, presentations, tutorials, fieldwork and use of both formative and summative assessment which draw upon evidence, reflection, analysis and evaluations. All PGTAs will be offered the option to complete a PGCE alongside their training, this is awarded by the University of Worcester.

Audience

Please note that to undertake the Primary Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship (PGTA) route, you must be employed as an unqualified teacher within a primary school setting that is willing to support you through the apprenticeship programme. The employing school acts as the apprenticeship employer and works in partnership with SCIL throughout the training period. Applications for this route need to be received by 31st March 2027 with your employing school listed in your personal statement.

SCIL does not maintain a list of schools seeking to recruit apprenticeship trainees, and we are unable to secure employment on behalf of applicants. Therefore, if you are considering applying for the PGTA route in 2027, we would encourage you to begin exploring employment opportunities within primary schools and discussing potential apprenticeship support with prospective employers.

Duration and Level

3 terms, The 2027/2028 Teaching Apprenticeship will start in September 2027. Induction day will be held in July 2027.

Entry Requirements

An honours degree from a UK Higher Education Institute or equivalent from ENIC
GCSE Maths, English Language and Science at Grade C/4 or above or approved equivalencies
Right to work in the UK

Conditional offers

Any offers made would be conditional on you meeting the entry requirements, which must be gained and proof of evidence provided by Friday 13th August 2027.

An enhanced clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) regarding suitability to work with young people
Fitness to teach declaration
2 references demonstrating you are suitable to work with Children and Vulnerable adults
Employer agreement to pay Unqualified Teacher Scale Point 1

Finance Information

The training fee is £9,000.

Levy paying schools will be able to draw down this money from the levy.

Non levy paying schools – The government will pay 95% of the costs of the apprenticeship (up to the £9,000 apprenticeship funding band maximum) and the school is required to pay the remaining 5%.
